"And if tonight my soul may find her peace in sleep, and sink in good oblivion, and in the morning wake like a new-opened flower then I have been dipped again in God, and new-created."

 About Sleep Disorders

What causes insomnia?

There are many common conditions that trigger insomnia:

  • Stress & worry – financial, emotional, exam stress
  • Chronic pain syndromes
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Sleep Apnoea
  • Degenerative diseases

Particular groups may be more likely to develop insomnia:

  • Travellers
  • Shift workers
  • Senior citizens
  • Students
  • People with chronic pain
  • Pregnant women
  • Women in menopause

Some medications are associated with insomnia. Amongst them are certain cold and asthma preparations, both over-the-counter and prescription varieties.  They may contain stimulants and thus have an effect on sleep. Medications for high blood pressure have also been associated with poor sleep. Check with your doctor if you think that your medications could be hampering your sleep.

Common stimulants associated with poor sleep include caffeine and nicotine. Consider not only restricting caffeine use in the hours immediately before bedtime but also limiting your total daily intake.

People often use alcohol to help induce sleep, as a nightcap. But alcohol is connected to sleep disruption and creates a sense of non refreshed sleep in the morning.

A bed partner with loud snoring may also impair your ability to get a good night's sleep.
