The Science of Sleep
What are the stages of sleep?
Why can't I sleep?
When we fall asleep we go through four different brainwave states. When these are disrupted we experience difficulty in sleeping which is sometimes temporary but can, if left unchecked, become chronic leading to many emotional difficulties and problems in dealing with day-to-day life.
As you can see from the diagram below we start off in the waking state of beta waves and descend through four different stages of sleep to delta waves which is the deep restorative sleep phase. The sleep cycle repeats itself 4 to 5 times during a normal sleep cycle. People suffering from poor quality sleep often do not achieve the deep restorative sleep levels.
