Benefits of Good Sleep
Sleep has many benefits.
Sleepyhead's Guide to Great Sleep
- Make sure that your bed is reserved for sleep and nookie. TVs, computers, and games consoles in the bedroom are things that you do when you're awake and in full beta brainwave mode. Your bed needs to be associated with the place where you sleep. Avoid reading in bed and definitely don't lie in bed worrying.
- Avoid caffeinated drinks after 3pm.
- Avoid alcohol too close to bedtime. Although many people self-medicate sleep disorders by using alcohol, it actually serves to disrupt sleep.
- Take regular exercise, including outdoor exercise. However avoid exercising after 7pm.
- Avoid large meals close to bedtime.
- Aim to make your sleep environment relaxing and calming.
- Avoid too many fluids close to bed time.
- Establish a regular routine for going to bed and getting up and maintain this over weekends and holidays to re-establish healthy sleep patterns.
- Aim to have your room darkened during the time you sleep. Daylight switches off melatonin which is the sleep hormone. Off course your Glo to Sleep™ mask blacks out 100% of external light.
- Avoid taking a hot bath two hours before going to bed. A warm bath is beneficial but a hot bath raises the body temperature and can make it difficult to fall asleep.
